A few weeks ago, I got me some new running shoes! It was time I replaced my old, worn-out shoes with new ones. Although I had gotten used to my old shoes and have had the pleasure of running in them for a year, a change was needful. Running experts recommend changing your running shoes every 4 to 7 months, depending on your mileage. I stretched mine to 13!
The new shoes have come just in time for my next race – a half-marathon, scheduled for 10 February (the word is out!). My feet should get used to the shoes and the shoes to my feet long before then. All that is now left for me to do is PREPARE to run a good race. The shoes are evidence that I am READY to do just that!
Since getting the new running shoes, my thoughts have frequently gone to one of the essential items that make up our spiritual armory: the shoes. The life journeys we embark upon determine the shoes we wear. These days, people have dinner shoes, work shoes, even church shoes! But the shoes we cannot afford NOT to own and wear “the preparation of the gospel of peace” (Ephesians 5:15). Having our feet shod with these is evidence we are READY to go wherever Christ sends us with the good news of God’s Kingdom. Wearing these means you are ready to run!
Many in my generation are overdue for a change of shoes! When we pursue prosperity at the expense of our purpose in posterity, we are wearing the wrong shoes! If we find ourselves stuck in the rut of survival, with little progress on the path of significance, we need a change of shoes!
How beautiful upon the mountains
Are the feet of him who brings good news,
Who proclaims peace,
Who brings glad tidings of good things,
Who proclaims salvation,
Who says to Zion,
“Your God reigns!” (Isaiah 52:7)
Lord, I am ready to run the course of your commandment! The old has gone, the new has come! I am ready to run!
